It is part of the so-called New Age minerals. Shungite, also called shungite or shungite is a natural mineral
carbonaceous found in deposits in Russia, in the Karelia region.

Its properties and applications are currently in full development, being the scientific fields of nanotechnology the ones that are being studied the most. Shungite is the only mineral on earth that contains "fullerenes", a special type of carbon molecular form.

It owes its name to its place of origin, a town in northwest Russia called Shunga, in the Karelia area, where at the beginning of the 18th century it was already used in thermal treatments and as a pigment for paint.

Antibacterial properties are attributed to it and it is usually applied in therapeutic treatments and for water purification.
